In this prison that he is stuck in they examine and keep the prisoners as isolated from other prisoners as possible, barely Rubashov manages to find a way to communicate with another prisoner. The two prisoners talk back and forth through tapping the alphabet on pi pes within their cells. This is about the time when Rubashov has another flashback of his foreign missions to arcsecond Germany, where the USSR communist were falling apart.
